A Future for Apprentices: More Pay, Better Training, Fairer Treatment

Apprentices in the metal, printing and vehicle trades are uniting to fight for the quality of pay, conditions and training of all apprentices.

AMWU aprentices are campaigning on these issues:

  1. TAFE Costs: some apprentices have to pay their own TAFE fees and some don't. That's unfair.
  2. Tool Allowances: Some bosses take their apprentices' tool allowance. Some group training organisations force different trades to buy standard tool kits that don't suit their needs.
  3. Low Wages: some apprentices earn a lot less than others, and most don't earn enough.
  4. Training Quality: Training quality - Some apprentices finish their time without learning key competencies in their trade because they are used as cheap labour sweeping up the shop floor instead of being trained. 46% of apprentices drop out before finishing - meaning their time, as well as the money the government provides to employers and training bodies, has been wasted.
  5. Job security - some apprentices are not aware that they can't be sacked. Some just sign the paperwork that releases their employer from their responsibilities because they're told they have to, and some are deliberately signed out early because their boss doesn't want to pay them anymore.

Take action now by contacting your local AMWU office, joining the AMWU Facebook group, or following the AMWU on Twitter.

But the best way to get involved is to talk to your fellow apprentices about the issues that concern you and raise these issues together with your union delegate.

If you're not in a workplace where the union is active, or you don't know who your delegate is, call the AMWU HelpDesk on 1300 732 698.

If you're not an AMWU member, or want to find out more about how the union can help you, visit www.amwu.org.au where you learn about the union, and join.
